Are you looking for a way to enjoy Maui’s pristine waters but don’t feel like trying to carve a huge wave on a surfboard? Then it’s time to try a different kind of boarding. Standup paddleboarding, or SUP, is a safe, fun and easy-to-learn activity that kids, adults and seniors can enjoy together. It’s hugely popular out here in Maui, and is an amazing way to spend the day. Bonus! Standup paddleboarding will give your abs, shoulders, and chest a good workout!

What is Stand Up Paddleboarding?

You’ll need two pieces of equipment to enjoy standup paddleboarding. First is the board. A standup paddleboard looks like a large surfboard, but it is designed to balance easily on the water and allow you to stand. You’ll also need a paddle. This is what allows you to propels your board forward.

To get started, walk with your board out into the water. If you are trying this for the first time, it might be easiest to lay on your stomach on the board first, and then to slowly get to your feet. You’ll want to stand in the middle of the board facing forward, with your feet shoulder-width apart.

Now, stick your paddle straight down into the water slightly in front of you. One hand should be on top of the paddle, while the other hand is about halfway down the shaft. Use your full body, from your legs to your shoulder and core to pull the paddle back. Your board will glide gently across the water. Many serious paddleboarders will bend slightly at the knee as they paddle to put more power in their stroke.

The Joy of Standup Paddleboarding

Standup paddleboarding is a great way to get exercise and to enjoy time on the water. Since it is so easy to learn and easy on the joints, it makes for a great family friendly activity for all ages. In Maui, you can sign up for SUP tours that will take you to beautiful coves and hidden beaches. You can also rent your own equipment and head paddles and take them to the beach for self-guided fun.

If you are a more serious athlete, perhaps you might be interested in signing up for a SUP race. The sport of SUP is growing in popularity, and there are quite a few well-known races that take place in Hawaii each year.
