The 28th Celebration of Hula O Nā Keiki will be held November 9-10, 2018 at Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel. Hula students from Hawai`i and around the world are invited to compete through interview, dance, chant, and costume categories.
Hula o nā Keiki is a solo hula competition for children ages 5-17. Participants are required to learn, interpret, and perform a Maui chant. The hula competition is just one facet of a three-day event designed to allow participants the opportunity to learn about and nurture Hawaiian cultural values. This gives each student a sense of appreciation for the past and a deeper sense of identity with their Hawaiian ancestors. It is our intent to provide an avenue through which they may express their new understanding and awareness of the Hawaiian language and culture through the art of hula and oli. The competition also advocates for the writing of new mele and the perpetuation of hapa haole music.
The Hawaiian Festival of Arts and Crafts, in conjunction with Hula o nā Keiki, features unique local artisans. It also provides a venue for participants, their hālau, families and the community to learn from cultural practioners through demonstrations, presentations and workshops.
