Best Road Bike Routes in Maui

Passionate road cyclists don’t need to hang up their clip-in cycling shoes just because they’re going on vacation in Maui. Our island may be known as a beach paradise, but it’s a well-hidden secret that we are also a cycling paradise. We’ve got long, windy roads that will challenge even the strongest quads, along with wondrous views that are well worth the sweat and pain. Before you set out to cycle in Maui, make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Once you’re set, try out one of these great road bike routes in Maui:

Kula & Ulupalakua

Beginning and intermediate cyclists, or those who simply don’t want to destroy their legs while on vacation should consider taking a tour of Kula and Ulupalakua. The 3,000 foot elevation keeps this upcountry region cool all year round. Cyclists can expect a ride through serene countryside, complete with farms, goats, and purple blossoms in the spring and early summer. You can design the ride and mileage to suit your preferences and skill level.

West Maui Loop – 62 Miles

This long, challenging loop has it all. You will test your legs on steep climbs followed by fast descents, interspersed with lots of enjoyable cruising along narrow roads and through towns big and small, including Napili, Honokawai, Maalaea, Olowaulu, and Lahaina. The views are truly breathtaking, and you’ll have the Pacific Ocean as a constant companion on this ride.

East Maui Loop – 115 Miles

Looking to do a century ride? Well, you can do that and then some with this amazing and difficult route. You’ll get a taste of Maui’s unique microclimates as you ride through rain forests, dry ranch lands, and small towns. This ride takes you along the famous Hana Highway, with its 620 curves and 46 one-lane bridges. You’ll have to be very careful and observant, but for veteran riders, this ride is without comparison. Feel free to take a pit stop and gulp down some fresh fruit juice smoothies at any of the small towns you’ll pass through, including Paia, Makawao, Haiku, Kipahulu, Ulupalakua, Kula, and Hana.

Haleakala Summit – 36 Miles

Don’t be fooled by the relatively low mileage of this route. The ride up to Haleakala’s summit is a difficult ride that will test your legs, lungs, and endurance. It is also a bucket list entry for any serious cyclist. Start at the bottom of the dormant volcano at sea level and then grind your way up 10,023 feet of elevation to the top. Wind can be a big issue on this ride, so ride times will vary greatly. We suggest taking it easy and enjoying the view instead of trying to set any personal records.
