Restaurants Dad Will Appreciate

Havens Harborside

Father’s Day brunches are nice. But let’s be honest: most dads are chasing down grilled meats, bold flavors, and maybe a whiskey back. Try these:

  • Havens Harborside Fish & Chophouse (Ma’alaea): The freshest fish you can find is walked from the boats to their kitchen. Chef of the Year 2025.
  • Makawao Public House (Makawao): Burgers, beers, and steaks, friendly local vibe.
  • Monkeypod Kitchen (Wailea & Ka’anapali): Their kiawe-grilled steak and Old Fashioned are a dad magnet.
  • Aloha ‘Aina BBQ (Haiku): Eating outside on the way back or to Hana never tasted so good!
  • Restaurant Marlow (Pukalani): Wood-fired, made-to-order pies from a food truck Dad will probably rave about more than a five-star meal.

A Quick Look at Father’s Day History

Before there were ties and mugs that said “World’s Best Dad,” there was Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, she proposed a day to honor fathers like her own: a Civil War vet who raised six children solo. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910.

Keiki in Maui

It took over 60 years for the day to become official. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making it a national holiday just in time for summer BBQs and awkward handshakes. Though most families celebrate their father’s with gifts, cards, and meals, some fathers celebrate their family by doing something special like a Maui treasure hunt. It’s never a bad time to do something special for your keiki, even on Father’s Day!
