A Guide to Maui Eating for Vegetarians

It can be a little stressful to go on vacation as a vegetarian. Which restaurants have good vegetarian options? How will servers treat you if you ask for meatless dishes? When you travel to Maui, you don’t have to worry. Not only do we have a seemingly numberless choice of amazing family-owned restaurants, but many also offer great vegetarian dishes.

Our Farm-to-Table Philosophy

Living on a small island far out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Maui takes a great amount of pride in being as self-sufficient as possible. Because food shipments from mainland USA are so expensive, we have a long history of growing our own food. When you check out a menu at many of our restaurants, you’ll discover that the food was grown and cultivated right on the island. That means that our fruits and veggies are fresh and taste great. Your vegetarian meal will be anything but bland.

Which Restaurants to Choose

Here in Maui, we do not have quite the selection of specifically vegetarian and vegan restaurants that you might be used to if you are from a large city, but many of our restaurants offer delicious vegetarian options. If you love salads, you have come to the right island! Our salads are full of fresh veggies that will taste like they just came off the vine. In many instances, they have! Also, with a quick search on Yelp! or Trip Advisor, you can find Indian, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants that include vegetarian meal options. Italian restaurants can also be an excellent choice if you love heaping dishes of pasta in fresh marinara sauce.

If you happen to be a pescatarian (someone who doesn’t eat meat but does eat fish), then our island will be your fresh fish paradise. We love our fish, shrimp, crab, and lobster dishes, and you’ll eat some of the best and freshest seafood in our restaurants.

Finally, the locals in Maui are very kind and understanding. If you find yourself famished and at a restaurant with no specific vegetarian dishes, just have a chat with your waiter or waitress. They can probably whip you up a great salad or put together a couple of appetizers that will fill you right up. If nothing else, our local smoothie roadside stands can keep you going until you find a restaurant with a better vegetarian selection.

If you book your Maui vacation rental with Ali’i Resorts, let us know if you have any specific eating restrictions or preferences. We would be happy to make recommendations specifically for vegetarians or any other type of eater. Our mission is to provide you with the best customer service possible when you book through us, so don’t be shy about asking for our Maui restaurant recommendations.
