Whale Day has been one of Maui’s most popular events for 35 years. Voted “Best Community Festival” by the readers of Maui Time Week this all-day celebration honors the humpback whales that come to Maui each winter and raises awareness to protect these majestic animals and their vital ocean habitat. 2) MAUI’S AGRICULTURAL FESTIVAL

On the first Saturday in April, Maui County Farm Bureau along with the farmers, ranchers and agricultural allies present the annual Maui County Agricultural Festival to share agriculture’s vital role in the economy, environment, and lifestyle of Maui. Held on the lū‘au grounds of Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapū, this is Maui’s prime event to raise awareness about local agriculture on Maui.

Taste local fresh flavors and have fun. Hosted by Maui County Farm Bureau in partnership with Office of Economic Development, and supported by generous sponsors, the festival provides the one-stop experience of the wondrous impact of agriculture in the day-to-day life.

3) EAST MAUI TARO FESTIVAL

An annual event held in Hana, Maui, Hawaii each spring, focusing on kalo or taro, Hawaii’s traditional staple food that celebrates the restoration of Hawaiian culture. All‑day festival features local musicians, hula halau, 20 food booths, each featuring a kalo dish, Arts & Crafts, Info Tent and the Ag Tent with a popular Farmers Market; hands‑on poi‑pounding is a highlight for visitors and locals alike.

5) KING KAMEHAMEHA DAY

Kamehameha Day was established by royal decree on December 22, 1871 by King Kamehameha V as a national holiday. Kamehameha Day was created to honor the memory of Kamehameha, the king’s great grandfather, who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 and became Hawaii’s first king. Today the Festival continues to pay tribute to Kamehameha and acts to protect, preserve, and perpetuate, the Hawaiian culture. The Festival features traditional Hawaiian dance, music, chant, practices, arts, and crafts that are enjoyed by thousands of island residents and visitors from around the world.

6) MAUI OBON FESTIVAL

This centuries-old Buddhist tradition finds new life every summer here in the islands. June marks the opening of Maui’s obon season, when typically quiet Buddhist temples welcome a flurry of revelers.

At its core, obon is a time to honor the deceased. Graves are cleaned and prayers are said — but it is not a somber occasion. The Technicolor festival is marked by vibrant kimono, bright lanterns, and booming taiko drums that awaken and welcome ancestors back to this world.
